Maps of Dystopia 2020  involves a video with composed sound, in which I perform experimental movements whilst wearing a constructed and decorated garment.

Through screen printing Islamic patterns and acrylic pour painting the garment. I combine and use different backgrounds that are green-screened such as Syria's warzone, it suggests a division of two places and a notion of utopian and dystopian. One is comfortable as opposed to the other space. The disparity of fast and slow movements, is a reference of time, on how fast the Middle East's wars can be, and its land destructed within seconds but reconstructed for months or years. This piece focuses on the destruction and war crisis in the Middle East, along with how people of the land are affected and torn apart. It is important to raise awareness of these ‘dystopian’ countries as they are losing their existence as well as their culture, identity, and place. Rather it is a nod to the forgotten histories and identities of those countries.

Utopian or Dystopian? 2020

Utopian or Dystopian? 2020, acrylic pour paint, posca pens, acetate and paper.

This project led to the creation of Maps of dystopia, 2020.

Displays five countries I suppose are the most ‘endangered’. The background of the maps are purposely made to seem impure and imperfect suggesting its location is wearing away. Likewise, the manner and composition of the acrylic pour imply those countries facing degradation and disappearance of its land and people. It is a means of social and political expression whilst asking viewers which countries they are and appear utopian or dystopian?  The intention is to prompt our reflection of awareness and connections to the natural world and people.
