M-power, 2021 is an ideal representation of Muslim women, who appear more empowering than they are viewed as today. It is a collection of powerful unique garments that are supposedly appear quite heroic and almost act like artefacts in a museum. Inspired by the shapes and colours of Islamic patterns and architecture (the Holy Kaabah) as well as popular current western logos (Nike). From this I try to blend the two and create a sense of belonging to British culture and society. The repetitive Islamic patterns that gradually draw apart reflects the negative perceptions of Muslim women in western society and its unity between both societies. These 8 pointed stars also represent the light and infinite nature of Allah (God). Moreover, creating the extensive cape was inspired by the Islamic prayer mats as well as the character Batman's costume. The idea of this superhero's character is quite hidden and invisible similarly to a Muslim women's dress code however I believe there is a more sense of hypervisibility for a Muslim women. In terms of approach and technique to making this piece, was to create it in a conceptual and expressive manner. I also took inspiration from artists Lisa Milroy's expanded garment paintings and Soheila Sokhanvari's use of repetitive eastern patterns.
